The White House has confirmed that the U.S. search in Iraq for banned weapons, which it earlier cited as justification for the war against Saddam Hussein, has been quietly ended after nearly two years, with no evidence of their existence.I have so much to say about this, it would take up the better part of this page. Let me self-edit myself, then. First: I do not think Saddam was a good guy. Second: Remember Paula Jones and Monica Lewinsky? Remember we were told by the Republicans that it wasn't about the sex, it was about the lying? Well, our sole legal justification for invading Iraq, overthrowing Hussein, and getting ourselves into this absolute horrid mess was: Saddam Hussein refused to abide by UN Security Council resolutions ordering him to destroy his WMDs. We vilified countries like France and Germany, which argued for caution, asking that Hans Blix's inspection team be givem more time to search for alleged WMDs, which we insisted existed. Turns out "Old Europe" was right and we were wrong. Turns out we owe Hans Blix an apology for bad-mouthing him right before we invaded Iraq. Turns out thousands of young American men and women, and countless innocent Iraqi civilians, have died either because Bush and his team knowingly or negligently lied. (Knowingly = they knew there was nothing there and used the UN resolutions as a pretext to get the guy who tried to kill Bush's daddy. Negligently = our supposedly crack, post-9/11 security and intelligence services were so inept and prone to political pressure, that we got it oh, so very, very wrong). And the fact that the same crowd that screamed for "Klintoon's" and "Hitlery's" blood because of the "lying" don't give a shit about this. They think it's dandy. They've convinced themselves into thinking that, if they just put a magnetic "Support our Troops" and "God Bless America" emblem on the back of their Tahoes, Trailblazers, and Explorers, that they're doing their part. Going to war because we're too lazy to find out the truth is an abomination.
