The Jesus fad

Craig blogs about a story indicating that Democrats want to fight fire with fire, and are scouring scripture to back up Democratic policy issues, ostensibly to counter what's become a creepy Republican co-option of the Bible. I'm sick and tired of the Jesus fad. I wish everyone would stop it, already. Stop it with using the Bible for political ends. Everyone. Stop it with the scouring of a thousands-of-years-old book of morality tales to prove any and all conclusions. Just stop it. The more Jesus-faddism creeps into our political lives, the more Taliban-like this country will become. To paraphrase what homophobes say about gay people, just keep your worshipping habits to yourself. I don't want to know about it. I remember fondly when peoples' religion was a private matter. It's not anymore. I don't give a crap who goes to what church or temple or mosque, as long as they're not bothering me with it. Well, when I'm basically told that I'm a hellbound traitor for supporting Kerry, I'm being bothered. The problem is, with the current Jesus fad, everyone who's a member of the club thinks it's great and dandy to hit everyone else over the head with it, and to out-Jesus everyone else. Are you really gonna get in good with the Big Guy if you have a "WWJD" wristband, or if you can cite the exact chapter and verse in the Bible that supports rampant homophobia? The kicker now is the magnetic yellow ribbons with a cross in the middle. Support-our-troops-and-Jesus. Anyone find it just a tad ironic that those yellow ribbons are MAGNETIC?! Makes it so easy to remove once the "support-our-troops" fad wanes, as did the immediate post-9/11 flag-waving. You know, for a country that supposedly cherishes individualism, there sure are a lot of joiners & followers out there, eh?
